Maybe I should just eat air?!? The thought has jokingly crossed my mind, maybe yours too? How on earth can we be certain anything we’re eating is free of contamination these days? In fact, eating air is likely worse! Many of you emailed me months ago after Dr. Oz broke the news about arsenic in apple juice, and now the news broke about arsenic in baby/toddler formula that uses brown rice syrup.   Rather than cover all the details of the studies on arsenic in our food, I’ve listed resources below for further reading. Apparently even if you eat organic, arsenic can...

Last week I posted on Facebook that Lucas, one of my 10-year old sons, came home from school with a blue mouth on Valentine’s Day.  Not a red mouth.  A blue mouth.   I didn’t tell him the evidence of his party choices were, well, evident.  I did ask him how he did with his choices at the party today.   He looked at me, looked away and replied, “Well okay.  I didn’t put a bunch of toppings on my ice cream. We celebrated Valentine’s a day early with Elle’s (4) preschool class yesterday. The parents decided to have a REAL Valentine’s party compete with red smoothies (shhh…I added some spinach), red peppers, grape tomatoes, slices of watermelon, apple, and beets. I LOVE BEETS (just like my Dad), but didn’t think any of Elle’s classmates would! You can only imagine how BIG I smiled when I saw cutie girl with her red hands and mouth (see picture). Yep, those are beet stains! Turns out she loves beets – her parents buy them every week for her and her little brother (not even...

“Nothing in life happens to you. It happens for you.” ~ Joel Olsteen. When I heard him say that, I stopped immediately and wrote it down (in iPhone notes – since I’ve lost my ability with pen and paper)! If you take that to heart, you can never be the victim of circumstance – every obstacle is an opportunity. I know this! I’ve heard it repeatedly, and now I’m truly trying to live it by example.   Take for example last week when I picked up my daughter from movie night at her grade school. It’s an amazing event held about once...

To eat bread or not to eat bread? The answer seems obvious, right?  Yes of course!  How could we get survive with no bread?  Read on…   There is lots of ongoing debate in the REAL food world about whether people should be eating grains or not.  Sometimes I have a health coaching client that I suspect would be healthier without eating grains and boy they don’t like me when I suggest taking a break from pasta, bread, muffins and all the other grain-based foods they love.  And they can’t imagine raising a child with no grains – that’s a tough one...
